The Actual Culprit: After over a year of speculation, the actual culprit in the murder of Vera Bates has been discovered. Who killed Vera Bates? Why it was none other than Vera herself! In an elaborate plot to exact the ultimate revenge, she killed herself and framed her husband. How did she do it? She put arsenic in the pastry she used to make a pie she ate when John Bates was already on the train back to Downton. Apparently everything in the kitchen was tested and the authorities said it had to be in the pastry. Why this wasn’t brought up in court? Good question. No answer.
Mrs. Bartlett’s recounting of the events: “The door was open so I looked in. She was cooking but she had to post a letter so she walked me down the street. She said Bates was coming back later for his tea. She was terrified. She was in a strange mood. Jumpy, fearful, but determined. I remember she had made pastry and she was scrubbing it out of her nails like she didn’t care if she took the skin off.”
So, Vera had made the pastry while Bates was out. Then, she ate the pie after he had gone back to Downton. We know this because Bates says he wasn’t there when she was eating the pie. Also, the letter she sent to Mrs. Bartlett saying she was afraid of Bates was posted right after she had seen her. Why not just hand her the letter or say to her what was in it? She needed the letter to arrive after her death in order to point a finger at Bates. So, now we know who did it, the only thing left is to FREE BATES!

Theory #53: Submitted via Tumblr: The Butler Did It! Carson and Cora actually had an affair and Mary was the result. When Vera threatened to ruin Mary’s reputation, Carson couldn’t stand by and do nothing. He knew Robert would be no help so he took it upon himself to get rid of the threat. When Bates was arrested he felt terrible but couldn’t come forward without the truth of Mary’s parentage coming to light.

Theory #52: Submitted via Twitter- Matthew and Mary killed Vera together but not for the reason you’d think. They killed Vera not to keep the story of Pamuk quiet, but to rid themselves of Carlisle once and for all. See, they knew he had threatened Vera and so they killed her with the thought that Carlisle would be arrested for the murder. Ironically, even though he wasn’t, he still hasn’t been mentioned. Hmm…

Theory #51: Submitted via Tumblr-O’Brien killed Vera. It was all part of an elaborate plot to get her nephew, Alfred, a job at Downton. By killing Vera and framing Bates, she opened up the valet job. Knowing Thomas was desperate for a job, even that of a footman again, she figured in making the valet job available, Thomas would take it which would ensure that at least one footman would need to be hired.

Theory #50: Submitted via Tumblr- Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes conspired together to kill Vera. Mr. Carson had to protect Lady Mary no matter what. Since Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes are secretly a thing, she just had to help.

Theory #49: Submitted via Tumblr-Robert and Bates killed Vera together. Robert wasn’t thrilled with Vera for taking Bates away from him. He suggested they kill her and Bates agreed because he’d do anything for his Lordship. When Bates was arrested, Robert thought his testimony would be enough to exonerate him. When it wasn’t, Bates convinced Robert to let him take sole responsibility to save Robert from the same fate.

Theory #48: Submitted via Confidential Informant-THE FISH KILLED VERA! The Notorious F R S killed Vera because she was tired of her showing up and putting a major crimp in the Anna/Bates happily ever after story line. She didn’t act alone though, she was just the mastermind behind the plan. Douglas scaled the building and unlocked the door for Bingo and Ralphie. Kaz came too but just bumped around. Bingo drank beer while Ralphie poisoned stuff, then they all climbed out the window down Douglas’ rope. Yesss, Bates ended up in prison but that was okay because hair.

Theory #47: Submitted via Twitter-Mrs. Patmore and Daisy conspired together to kill Vera. Daisy overheard Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson talking and felt really sorry for Mr. Bates. She had always liked him and wanted to help. Of course Daisy can’t keep a secret and Mrs. Patmore found out. She too had always liked the valet and the two of them decided to help him out. They went up to London and killed Vera. When Bates was blamed they felt bad but didn’t want to end up in prison either.

Theory #45: Submitted via Tumblr-The Dowager killed Vera. She was in London visiting Rosamund and decided to stop by and see Vera. She knew Vera had been paid off by Carlisle but didn’t believe she would stay quiet. She went to use her Dowager charm and see if she could secure her silence. Things went badly and Vera died. The Dowager was fine with Bates taking the blame since he is just a servant and she was never a big van of her son having a lame valet in the first place.

Dear MBLT Followers aka ALL THE AWESOME!

It will come as no surprise, I’m sure, that the yays had the vote by a landslide. I’d like to take a minute to thank all of you who were such good sports about this theory. I’d especially like to thank my Republican followers who did have fun with it and left me some great comments. I knew when I capped it that this was going to be a controversial one. I didn’t think my Tumblr followers would have a problem, it is Tumblr after all:), but figured some of my Twitter followers wouldn’t be pleased. I’m happy to report that those people are no longer with us. While I’m no fan of Romney’s, I would have done the same if it had been Obama that said it. Heck, it could have been the Queen or even the Pope and I would have theoried it. Do I believe Downton Abbey is going anywhere even if PBS funding is cut? No, of course not. NBCUniversal isn’t going to let this gem get away from them. It was just a comment that couldn’t be left alone. It had to be done. While this is my site, I do prefer to run it more as a moderator than a dictator. I love getting feedback and interacting with all of you. The handle is mine, but the concept is not and we all have great things to contribute. I try to keep the broad spectrum of my followers in mind (swearing to a minimum, politically neutral, etc) but I am an adult and sometimes I’m just going to do what I’m going to do. Bottom line, if you take something so seriously that you can’t have a little fun with it, this isn’t the place for you. To all of you who have a sense of humor and are still around, YOU ARE THE BEST!

Now, on another note. I got myself into a project yesterday. And, no, it did not involve cooking, smart asses. I was, however, inspired by my toast debacle from earlier in the week. My project did not turn out as I planned. I am creative, I am clever, I am not artistic. Why I thought this was a good idea I have no clue. If I ever decide to do something like this again, I need you all to reach through your computers and slap me. A slap 3,000+ strong should do the trick. It was supposed to be a Free Bates thing but Bates ended up looking more like Bingo. The hair in particular got messed up. Due to popular demand, I will post a pic at some point today. Don’t get too excited, it sucks but whatever. Okay, I think that’s enough rambling for now. On to the next.

Theory #44: Romney killed Vera. It was all part of a plan to destroy Downton from the bottom up. He actually was the one that started WWI and killed William, then he spread the Spanish flu to kill Lavinia.  Next, he decided to go for a twofer. He killed Vera and framed Bates. Bates was supposed to hang but Romney plans to rectify that if he is elected. His thought was with Downton destroyed, he could focus on taking down Sesame Street. Without those two shows, no one would fight him over cutting PBS funding. ROMNEY WANTS TO KILL BATES AND BIG BIRD YO!

Theory #43: Rodney McQueen killed Vera and then tried to confuse Terry Starling.

Theory #42: Submitted via Twitter-Mrs. Patmore killed Vera. It was actually an accident. When she heard Bates was heading to London to try and reason with Vera, Mrs. Patmore baked him a cake to take with him as a peace offering of sorts. Unfortunately she got a bit confused and ended up sending an arsenic special for tea instead. Bates was too upset to eat but Vera chowed down. Mrs. Patmore never realized her mistake so poor Bates got blamed.
